This is the reality for many inhabitants and visitors to towns such as Helsinki, Oslo, and Copenhagen, where coastal health culture is rapidly expanding! This trend originally gained popularity at the Allas Sea Pool in Helsinki. Allas, a beach complex built by Raoul Grünstein, became a hit following its inauguration in 2016. Not only did it breathe new life into an old industrial region, but it also embraced the notion of individuals who began to place a higher importance on their well-being and life experiences, particularly during the epidemic. Today, Allas has over 2,000 members and receives over 800,000 visitors per year. Furthermore, comparable new facilities are planned for the cities of Oulu and Turku, with intentions to expand to Stockholm in 2024.
Thankfully, Allas is not alone in this wave of well-being development. Oslo’s waterfront districts have also undergone similar transformations, with the SALT complex leading the way! Originally a temporary art project, SALT has found a permanent home in the Norwegian capital, where it has evolved into a cultural and health oasis for both young people and adults. We’re not just talking about saunas, but about a venue that mixes history, culture, and a feeling of community, drawing both local adolescents and interested tourists.
The Löyly project, also in Helsinki, was developed in an abandoned industrial area that no one used to visit. Today, the location is a landmark, complete with spas, bars, and restaurants, garnering an amazing 200,000 visitors every year. Löyly is so iconic that it has been certified as a historic building, which is unusual for such a new structure
What fascinates me about this entire narrative is how the sauna, a long-standing aspect of Nordic society, is being recreated. Locations such as Kiulu, in the Finnish city of Ähtäri, are elevating the sauna experience by fusing modern design and a closer relationship with nature with the customs of a traditional sauna. These locations, which offer a place to disconnect and just be present, appear to be a reaction to our society’s growing reliance on technology.
It appears that other nations are experiencing similar tendencies. Drawing inspiration from Nordic traditions, BW Sauna offers mobile, permanent, and even custom saunas for homes, accelerating the growth of this rich culture in Minnesota. It’s worth noting that these smaller projects also provide genuine experiences of interacting with others and reaping the benefits of a beneficial pastime.
Pools and saunas, whether in Finland, in Norway, or on the shore of Lake Superior, are reinventing what it means to live well. They demonstrate that, occasionally, something as basic as a cool swim and the cozy embrace of a communal sauna may bring about profound transformation!
