We’ve been building saunas professionally for 5+ years, and the difference between custom and kit shows up over time. A kit sauna is built to a price point. The materials are thinner, the joinery is simpler, and the assumptions are generic. That matters because saunas live under conditions almost nothing else does, daily swings between heat, humidity, and cold that punish weak materials and shortcuts. Custom is the opposite approach. We choose the wood, the framing, the ventilation, and the details based on your space, your climate, and how you actually plan to use it. The result is a sauna that fits the property, holds up under real use, and still looks and performs the way it should years in. If you’re investing in something guests will remember, or something you’ll use for the next decade, custom isn’t the upgrade. It’s the baseline.

BW custom saunas are designed to last 20 to 40 years and beyond with proper care.
BW often builds saunas to replace cheaper saunas that have burned out, broken down, or failed after only 2 to 5 years. Many kit saunas are not made for decades of real use, weather exposure, heat cycles, and long term maintenance.

In many cases, no. Most BW sauna structures are designed to stay under the square footage that commonly triggers permit requirements.
Local rules still vary by city, county, HOA, and property type, so we always recommend checking your local requirements before installation.
BW saunas are built on a steel frame, which gives you more flexibility for placement. They can rest on a concrete slab, posts, or a prepared gravel area. Electric models may require electrical work, while wood fired models may have different placement and clearance considerations.
