Finnish Sauna Or Russian Steam Room: Which Is Better For Your Health?

What is the fundamental difference?

A Finnish sauna is a dry heat, and a Russian sauna is a wet one.

How do these two types of baths differ from each other? You can warm up and relax well in the Finnish sauna, as well as in the Russian steam room. In both cases, there is a sharp increase in temperature, which relieves the body of toxins and stimulates the work of all organs and systems, but in these two types of saunas it happens in different ways. The reason for this is that they have different levels of humidity and temperature.

In a Finnish sauna, the humidity typically does not exceed 15% and the temperature can reach up to 150 degrees. In contrast, in a Russian traditional steam room, the humidity is usually at least 60% and can reach 90%. The average temperature in the sauna hovers around 60-70 degrees Celsius, with the upper shelves being about 10 degrees hotter.

Finnish sauna and russian steam room: similarities and differences

Two Cultures, One Minnesota: Explore Heat from the North to the East.

The main features of the Finnish sauna:

Microclimate:
Dry steam, while the temperature ranges from 90 to 150 C. Humidity in the steam room is approximately 15%.

Ease of use:

In the Finnish sauna, you don’t need constantly to pour water on the rocks or steam each other with birch limbs, as the temperature will naturally cause sweat. You just need to lie back and relax.

Pressure:

The air pressure inside a sauna is identical as the pressure outside. That is why there is no sensation that a person has got into a “suffocating chamber” and is already counting the minutes until the session ends.

Recommendations for visiting the Finnish sauna:

Sweating is much more intense in hot and dry air. The skin is not moisturized by condensation, but rather by perspiration, which makes the thermal effect less aggressive. In the relaxing atmosphere, a strong person can spend up to 3 hours in the sauna, alternating between steaming sessions of 10-15 minutes and rest periods of up to half an hour.

Key features of the Russian steam room:

Microclimate:
The steam in a Russian steam room is very humid, with an average humidity level of 70%. The temperature is usually lower than in Finnish saunas, ranging from 60 to 70 degrees Celsius. In here, the warming effect is achieved mostly due to humidity, because the thermal conductivity of moist air is higher than that of dry air.

Activity:

You can’t simply lie on a bench in a Russian steam room. It is ideal to change position, especially if a masseuse with a birch limb is working on you. In addition, activity promotes more intensive sweating, which enhances the effects of the vaping process.

The pressure contrast:

In order to maintain the pressure contrast, there is ventilation in the Russian steam room. Therefore, according to the classic scheme, steam exits the furnace under pressure, passing through a constricted opening. Consequently, due to the pressure difference, something similar to an explosion takes place.

The stones in the Russian steam room are located in a stove behind a closed door. When you need to increase the heat, you have to open the door and splash water onto the stones. Conversely, in the sauna, the stones are placed on an open surface and give off their heat into the air.

Recommendations for visiting the Russian steam room:

Heat exchange is difficult in hot humid air and, as a result,  sweat does not evaporate from the surface. It is impossible to stay in such an atmosphere for a long time without the risk of overheating. Therefore, steamed people periodically run out and dive into the river, pool, snowdrift. It is recommended to stay in a traditional russian steam room for no longer than 7 minutes at a time, making a mandatory break for 10 minutes.

At BW we bring more than just warmth

Despite all the differences in the duration and features of steaming process, a traditional Finish sauna and a Russian banya are similar in their physiological effects on human. Therefore, the choice has to be influenced not by benefit, but by personal comfort. Those who like to sit longer and relax in a calm atmosphere, choose a Finish sauna. For example, athletes often do this after training to relax all their muscles. Those who like hot steam, a birch limbs, speed and fun will go to the Russian steam room. The beneficial effect in both cases will be similar.
