Yes. Ladling water over hot stones is the heart of the traditional experience, and it creates the burst of steam known as loyly. Pour slowly and in small amounts so each ladle turns to steam right away. If water starts to pool under the heater, ease off and let the rocks recover. You stay in full control of both heat and humidity, which is what makes a Finnish style sauna so special.

They are the same room used two ways. A traditional sauna runs dry until you add water to the rocks, and the moment you do, humidity climbs and the air feels softer. Run it with no water and you get classic dry heat. You decide session to session, which is why we build every BW sauna around a real steam capable heater.

Most traditional saunas are designed to run between roughly 150 and 195 degrees Fahrenheit, with electric heaters capped near the top of that range for safety. What you actually feel depends on insulation, ventilation, and bench height. That is up to you. Many bathers sit on a towel with no clothing since it is most comfortable, while others wear swimwear when sharing the space or when modesty matters. There is no wrong answer, and a towel underneath you is always a good idea for comfort and easy cleanup.

Children can enjoy a sauna, but because their bodies regulate heat differently, they should keep sessions short and go in with an adult. The heater is sized to the interior volume of the room, found by multiplying length, width, and height and accounting for glass. That volume sets the kilowatt rating and the circuit your electrician runs. Lighting sits on a separate, smaller circuit. A well built sauna targets roughly six air changes per hour. Fresh air is usually drawn in low and near the heater, most often from an adjacent conditioned room rather than straight from outside, so incoming air is clean. Exhaust is planned around the size and location of the room and has to be designed carefully to avoid trapping moisture in hidden cavities. Every BW layout is engineered for its specific space.

Not when it is built correctly. The risk comes from heat and moisture escaping into surrounding walls, which is why we do not recommend freestanding units dropped inside a house. A proper BW sauna uses a multi layer wall system sealed so moisture never reaches the cavity, with a continuous vapor barrier that keeps heat and humidity inside the room. Built to that standard, an indoor sauna is a dry, contained space that protects the structure around it.

In most home saunas a drain is a nice to have rather than a requirement, since the only water involved is what you ladle onto the rocks, and it dries as the room cools. Size comes down to ceiling height, length, and depth working together. A common ceiling height is 84 inches, which allows an upper and lower bench for distinct heat zones.
