Sauna Stones Explained: Which Rocks to Use and When to Replace Them

The stones in your sauna heater do more work than people give them credit for. They’re not just sitting there for looks; they store the heat and turn a splash of water into steam. That’s why choosing the best sauna stones matters more than many sauna owners realize. Use the wrong rock, or use the right rock for too long, and you end up with a heater that underperforms or, worse, a safety problem.

Why You Can’t Use Just Any Rock

Porous and sedimentary rocks (sandstone, and limestone) can trap small amounts of moisture inside their structure. A sauna heater puts rocks through an intense heat cycle, and as they heat up, the trapped water converts to steam and expands dramatically, which can cause them to crack or pop.1

The Best Sauna Stones

Most commercial sauna stones are made from peridotite, a closely related variant called olivine diabase, or similar dense igneous rocks. They’re usually formed deep underground under intense heat and pressure.

Peridotite specifically is, according to its geological classification, a dense, coarse-grained igneous rock consisting mostly of the minerals olivine and pyroxene,2 with very low silica content. This composition doesn’t have the layered or porous structure that traps moisture, so the stones are resistant to fracturing under thermal stress.

Olivine diabase shares much of that same mineral makeup and is widely used as a more affordable, easier-to-source alternative.

When to Replace Your Sauna Stones

Even good stones don’t last forever. Every heating and cooling cycle puts a small amount of thermal stress on a rock’s internal structure, and over time that adds up. Geological research on rock behavior under repeated thermal cycling has found that heating and cooling cycles cause measurable structural damage and increased microcrack formation over time, even in dense, naturally heat-resistant rock types.3 A sauna heater puts stones through a milder version of that same repeated stress, session after session, for years.

Here are some signs that your stones have reached the end of their useful life:

  • Visible cracks or chips. Small cracks tend to grow with each additional heating cycle, eventually leading to crumbling or fragmenting.
  • Stone dust or small fragments at the base of the heater. This is usually a sign that stones above are breaking down, even if they don’t look obviously cracked from the outside.
  • Reduced heat or weak steam production. As stones break down, they lose surface area and density, which affects how well they store heat and vaporize water.
  • A noticeably different sound when stones are tapped together. Solid stones produce a sharp, clear sound. A dull or hollow sound usually means a stone has internal damage that isn’t visible from the outside.

The rate at which you replace your stones depends on how frequently you use your sauna. Just spot-check your stones every few months and you shouldn’t have a problem. If you’re regularly finding fragments at the bottom of the heater, it’s time for a full replacement.

Good sauna stones are a small, inexpensive part of your setup, but they have an outsized effect on both performance and safety. Stick to dense, low-porosity stone made for the purpose, peridotite or olivine diabase, and build in a habit of checking on them every so often rather than waiting for a problem to show up mid-session.
